ALBA
Alba lies among the hills of the Langhe and the Roero; it is the biggest town in this area and is characterised by a millenary history.
In the Langhe many castles, churches and abbeys were built in the Middle Ages whereas in the following centuries rose mansions, palaces, country villages and cottages.
The Roero, which lies north-west of Alba, is named after the noble family which ruled this area for a long time. This region is characterised by two different kinds of landscape: an undulated tableland in the west, a labyrinth of hills in the east.
The Langhe and the Roero are famous for their charm all over the world; their farmhouses and cottages are the goal of many wealthy lovers of the hill landscape. It is easy to fall in love with this landscape walking or driving along the paths connecting little towns which look like as if they still belonged to the past. Fascinated by views which look like as if they were painted and change continuously because of the light and shadow effects of the sun, you could decide to eat in a little trattoria to taste the home cooking and the local wine…You would like never to go away!
This is a land of vine-growing and wine-producing and boasts dozens of doc and docg marks; names like Barolo, Barbaresco and Nebbiolo are symbols of wines which are unique for their refinement. Another unique product is the truffle; the white truffle of Alba is picked in autumn and is a rare jewel: it reaches exorbitant prices every year.
This area of the Cuneo Province is well known also for the hazelnut production, in particular for the Round Delicate Langhe Variety, unequalled for its organoleptic properties: it has been awarded the IGP mark in this area.
“Vinum” takes place in Alba in April: it is the symposium of the Cuneo wine-producing, whereas between the end of September and the beginning of November takes place the “National Fair of the White Truffle of Alba”.
In the surroundings of Alba there are other interesting towns like Cherasco, a medieval town, Pollenzo, which was founded by the Romans and Bra, which was built on the banks of the river Tanaro.
