MONDOVI'
Mondovì lies in the valley of the torrent Ellero and consists of two parts, the high and older one and the low and more recent one.
In this area there are many mountains where you can pick top quality chestnuts which have been awarded the IGP mark.
Garrone, Marrone, Bracalle and Castagna della Madonna are the names of some chestnut varieties: more or less 5000 chestnuts are picked every year.
In these mountains you can have interesting walks in autumn and pick excellent mushrooms among the dead leaves and in shade of a chestnut tree or of a beech. You can find many mushroom varieties, also the famous edible boletus.
Carrù is an interesting town where you can visit the “Mostra del Fungo” (Mushroom exhibition) in September and the “Fiera del Bue Grasso” (Fat Beef Fair) in December, where you can taste the “bollito alla piemontese”, one of the typical dishes of this region.
The attractions of this area are the Caves of Bossea (karst origin) in the Corsaglia Valley, which are the most interesting caves in Italy from a scientific, naturalistic and tourist point of view. You cannot miss the sanctuary of Vicoforte with the biggest elliptical dome in the world; in Vicoforte takes place the “Sanctuary Fair” in September which draws thousand of curious people every year.
Mondovì is known also for the pottery collectors, since here are produced collector’s pieces realized according to precise traditional methods.
